Encouragement from God's Word

Proverbs 23:17–18
Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.
There is surely a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off.

T
here is a always a temptation to see the ways of the world and be envious. Wealth looks to bring happiness. Indulgence is appealing. Acceptance from others makes us feel wanted. There are countless examples of ways that the world lures us into attitudes and behaviors that are not God-pleasing.

“Be zealous for the fear of the Lord.” This zeal starts with a faith that knows our relationship with the Lord is based on Jesus and what God has done for us. In Christ, we find the righteousness that we lack. We are forgiven for our sins and promised a victory over death and eternal life. Because we are renewed by Jesus, we find purpose in life. We are zealous to serve God by serving others.

What is stated above is nothing new to a Christian. And yet our hearts can easily “envy sinners.” The path of sinful worldliness is always before us and continues to look inviting.

Brother or sister in Christ, you belong to Jesus! In the forgiveness of sins that he pours on you is a continual renewal. Hear and believe his promises. As you trust in him “your hope will not be cut off.” Faith in Jesus has only one outcome – victory! It is a victory we see glimpses of in our daily lives as we live in the newness of life we have from Christ. Ultimately, it is the eternal victory of heaven. Focus on the reality of who you really are because of Jesus.
